What Is Active Sub-Slab Depressurization?

ASD is the most effective and widely recommended radon mitigation method for Canadian homes — endorsed by Health Canada.

Side-by-side cutaway diagram comparing two ASD configurations: A — basement-vented (not recommended, exhaust at ground level); B — EPA-recommended geometry routing the exhaust pipe up through the roof, well above living spaces.
  1. A suction point is created under your slab A small hole is drilled through your basement floor. A pipe is inserted to create a pressure differential beneath the foundation.
  2. A fan draws radon out continuously A low-energy fan runs 24/7, pulling radon gas from beneath the slab before it can enter your living space.
  3. Radon is safely vented above the roofline The pipe runs up through the home or exterior wall and exhausts above the roofline, diluting radon harmlessly into the open air.
  4. Verified by post-installation measurement After installation, we measure your home's radon level using calibrated equipment to confirm the system is performing effectively.

  1. Initial Contact

    Contact Us for a Consultation

Call, email, or book online. We'll ask about your home, your radon test results, and your foundation type to understand what's needed before we visit.

  2. Site Assessment

In-Home Assessment & Custom System Design

We visit your property to assess the foundation, identify the optimal pipe route, and design a system specific to your home's layout and sub-slab conditions. No two systems are identical.

  3. Installation Day

    Core Drilling & Pipe Installation

We drill a precise core through your basement floor to reach the sub-slab material. The PVC pipe is installed and routed through the home or along the exterior to above the roofline.

  4. Installation Day

    Fan Installation & System Sealing

An energy-efficient fan is mounted and connected. All penetrations, cracks, and sump covers are sealed with appropriate sealants to maximize system performance.

  5. Verification

    Post-Installation Radon Measurement

After installation, we measure radon levels using calibrated equipment to confirm the system is achieving the expected reduction. We don't leave until the numbers confirm success.

  6. Completion

    Documentation & 10-Year Warranty

You receive a full written report of pre- and post-installation readings, system specifications, and your 10-year parts and labour warranty. We're available for any follow-up questions.

Works With All Toronto Home Types

Toronto's housing stock spans multiple foundation types. Our systems are designed and adapted for each one.

Poured Concrete Basement

The most common Toronto foundation. ASD works exceptionally well — a single suction point typically achieves excellent coverage across the entire slab.

✓ Ideal for ASD

Block / Stone Foundation

Older Toronto homes often have block or stone foundations. We use interior membrane systems or block-wall depressurization to address radon entry points effectively.

✓ Adapted solutions available

Crawl Space

Crawl space homes require a combination of sub-membrane depressurization and vapour barrier installation. We assess airflow patterns before designing the system.

Mitigation Questions

Common questions about radon mitigation in Toronto homes.

How long does installation take?
Most single-family home installations are completed in 4–6 hours. Complex systems with multiple suction points or difficult pipe routing may take a full day. We'll give you a clear time estimate before we start.
Do I need to leave my home during installation?
No — you can stay home during the installation. There will be some drilling noise and minor dust during the core drilling phase (typically 15–30 minutes). We clean up thoroughly before leaving.
Will the system affect my home's appearance?
Interior routing keeps the pipe inside the home (through utility spaces or closets) for a clean finish. Exterior routing runs the pipe along the outside wall, which is less visible. We discuss both options during the site assessment and route based on your preference.
How loud is the fan?
Modern ASD fans are extremely quiet — comparable to a refrigerator hum. Most homeowners report they can't hear the fan at all from their living areas. Fans are typically installed in utility rooms, garages, or on exterior walls.
How much electricity does the system use?
ASD fans are very energy-efficient, typically using 25–90 watts — about the same as a standard light bulb. Annual electricity cost is usually $25–$75 depending on your local rate. The health and liability benefits far outweigh this modest operating cost.
